Presentations

10:00-10:50
Empowering Young Readers with the Brain in Mind
[Presenter] Mari Nakamura
[Materials] English Land, Penguin Kids
[Abstract] Promoting young learners' reading skills is one of the biggest challenges among EFL teachers of young learners. Will there be any ways to accelerate their literacy development when we see them only once a week? What does current research in brain science inform us about effective approaches in literacy education? In this practical session, the presenter will demonstrate some fun and brain-friendly literacy activities using graded readers and illustrated stories.

11:20-12:10
Expanding Lessons within Classroom Boundaries

[Presenter] Ann Mayeda
[Materials] Our Discovery Island, else
[Abstract] As teachers we all know that the more exposure to language, the more uptake is likely to occur. The reality for many young learners is that much of the input happens only within the English classroom walls. So how do we maximize language input within the school, particularly now that English is a part of the curriculum? In this workshop, the presenter will take some of what is covered in other subject areas and offer ideas on how to expand these into curricular goals in English classes and vice versa.

13:00-13:50
Stimulating Games for Upper Grades
[Presenter] Aleda Krause
[Materials] SuperKids
[Abstract] TBA

14:20-15:10
Embracing the Digital Age Inside and Outside the Classroom
[Presenter] John Wiltshier
[Material] Our Discovery Island
[Abstract] "One hour a week doesn't give the children a lot of exposure to English and we need something that inspires the children to practice their English more at home."

"I want to help, but I'm not sure how."

Can you guess who made which comment, teacher or parent? With these two comments in mind the presenter will show how to increase exposure to English and build strong Home-School Links using components from the newly published Our Discovery Island.
After a quick unit walk-through, the presenter will demonstrate the Online World, model using the children's Chatroom facility and show ways to interactively use the course DVDs to strengthen Home-School Links.
Concerns about digital materials and FAQs will be addressed. Video interviews with children who have used the Online World will be shown. Questions will be welcome!
